2023 Theme - The Best Chocolate Sheet Cake

Any age may enter. One entry per person.

Amateur bakers only.

Must be submitted on or in a disposable container. Containers will not be returned.

RECIPE MUST BE FOLLOWED:

INGREDIENTS FOR THE CAKE:

  • 2 Cups Flour
  • 1 Cup Boiling Water
  • 1/2 Cup Houlton Farms Dairy Buttermilk
  • 2 Cups Sugar
  • 2 Whole Beaten Eggs
  • 1/4 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Baking Soda
  • 4 tbsp (Heaping) Cocoa
  • 1 tsp Vanilla
  • 2 Sticks Houlton Farms Dairy Butter

INGREDIENTS FOR FROSTING:

  • 1/2 Cups Finely Chopped Pecans
  • 6 tbsp Houlton Farms Dairy Milk
  • 1 tsp Vanilla
  • 1 3/4 Stick Houlton Farms Dairy Butter
  • 1 Pound (Minus 1/2 Cup) Powdered Sugar
  • 1 tbsp (Heaping) Cocoa

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. In a mixing bowl combine flour, sugar, and salt.
  2. In a saucepan melt butter, add cocoa and stir together.
  3. Add boiling water, allow mixture to boil for 30 Seconds, then turn off heat.
  4. Pour over flour mixture and stir lightly to cool.
  5. In a measuring cup, pour the buttermilk/chocolate mixture.
  6. Pour into sheet cake pan and bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes.
  7. While cake is baking, make the icing.
  8. Chop pecans finely.
  9. Melt butter in a saucepan.
  10. Add cocoa, stir to combine, then turn off the heat.
  11. Add the milk, vanilla, and powdered sugar. Stir together.
  12. Add the pecans, stir together, and pour over warm cake.
  13. Cut into squares.

Scoring

Score sheets will remain confidential. Decisions of the judges will be final.

Entries must be brought to the Exhibit Hall (Civic Center). You may enter through Elm St. Extension (if only dropping off, no fair parking) on Sunday, July 2nd from 10:00am- 12:00pm.

No late entries will be accepted. Judging begins promptly at 4:00pm.
