Livestock Exhibits

Livestock is the heart of the Houlton Agricultural Fair and we are proud to showcase a variety of animals year after year.

This amazing educational opportunity allows our community members and visitors a chance to learn more about the traditions of raising and caring for our beloved farm animals.

Rules & Regulations

All animals must be at the fair no later than midnight on Wednesday, July 17th, 2024.
All animals must be healthy and clean. Any animal may be asked to leave if deemed unhealthy by the Livestock Superintendent or Fair Veterinarian. All animals entering the grounds must meet the health requirements of the Maine State Department of Agriculture as established for State Fairs. Details of these requirements can be obtained from the Livestock Superintendent or from the Maine State Dept. of Agriculture, Augusta, ME
Animals are to stay on the fair grounds until released by the Livestock Superintendent.
Premiums will be given out in a Herdsmanship Competition. For Beef and Dairy you must bring a minimum of 6 Animals to compete. For Sheep and Goats you must bring a minimum of 5 animals to compete. There will also be an educational display contest.
All Entries are subject to approval or rejection by the Fair Veterinarian at any time during the course of the Fair.
Cooking and smoking are strictly prohibited in any tent, stable, or exhibit areas.
The Houlton Fair will, under no circumstances, be liable or responsible for any injury, losses, or damages sustained by the owner, agent, servant, employees, or animals entered in any class or exhibition while on the fairgrounds. All risks of loss, injury, damage or destruction to property or livestock are assumed in full by the owners, agents, servants, and employees; whether caused by active or passive negligence, condition of the premises or any other cause whatsoever. All owners hereby unreservedly and without exception agree to hold the Houlton Fair harmless for any loss, costs, or damages caused by them or arising from any occurrence in which they or their property or animals may be involved while on the premises of the Houlton Fair.
These rules and regulations, as well as the rules and regulations of each individual department, are subject to interpretation by, and only by, the Superintendent of Livestock for the Houlton Fair.
All livestock exhibitors will show their proof of exhibitor’s insurance at arrival.
Farm premiums will be paid after exhibitors have cleaned their stalls and pens. Large Herdsmanship Determination will be judged on five different categories. Each category will be worth a percentage:
A. Cleanliness – 20 %
B. Cooperation With Fair Officials, Fair Goers, and Other Exhibitors-20%
C. Overall Look of Display – 20%
D. Demonstrations to the Public – 20 %
E. Interaction with Fair Goers – 20 %

Draft & Working Horse

Horses must have current Coggins in order to enter fairgrounds, (proof of test must be available upon request). Must also have proof of liability insurance. Canadian horses will need coggins and an endorsed health certificate to cross the border on a 72-hour pass.

ANYONE WHO SHOWS A HORSE MUST REGISTER UNDER HIS NAME

Horses may stay on the grounds overnight for 1 night only.
For public health reasons you will be asked to clean up after your horse during your stay on the fairgrounds. A
convenient disposal site will be provided. In the event of an extra large turn-out we may be forced to limit the number
of horses that one person may enter into the single horse event. (This will allow for the event to proceed at a
reasonable pace.)

Youth Market Hog

Rules:
1. Members 9 years and older may show on (1) Auction Market Hog.
2. Commercial animals are shown separately from Market Hogs and are not eligible for
Grand Champion classes.
3. All animals should be between 180 and 280 lbs.
4. Animals must be kept under control.
5. Stall areas must be kept continuously clean.
6. Required dress: White shirt, tan pants and hard shoes or boots.

Other Livestock & Education Displays

Large Herd Educational Display

The display must consist of a display informing and educating the public about any agricultural topic of your choice. The display may include pictures, games and handouts. Display should be neat and well made.

Being available to answer questions are always a good thing.

You must be in the Large Herdsman Competition to compete.

Premiums for Educational Display For All Species of Animals:

Small Herdsman Award Competition

Any exhibitor with less than 6 animals in beef or dairy and less than 5 animals in sheep and goats may compete in the Small Herdsman Competition.

Will Be Judged as the open.

Small Herd Educational Display

You need to be in a Herdsmanship competition to compete.

All exhibitors will compete together in the Educational Display Contest.
