COOKING CONTESTS RULES AND RECIPES 

Rules and Regulations:

Any entry into one of the contests must be submitted on non-returnable, disposable plates/dishes, unless other wise statement in the contest.
All entries become the property of the Houlton Fair Assoc. upon submission.
All entries must conform to the recipe (if provided) and any other restrictions.
Any entry not subscribing to the rules and regulations will be disqualified.
Index card/recipe card must accompany each entry with NO entrant’s name, address and phone number.
Use Maine Apples and Maine Blueberries for the Maine State Pie Contests
Houlton Farms Dairy Contest – Bring Butter Wrapper and Milk Carton with Entry
Judges’ decisions are final.
Only one entry per person per contest. Contestants will be admitted free to the fair with their entry, up to one hour before the contest.


State of Maine Two Crusted Pie Contests

Apple Pie Contest & Blueberry Pie Contest
Prizes - 1st-$100 / 2nd-$50 / 3rd-$25
All pies must be in a disposable pie plate.

  1. The pie must be a two-crusted pie. Recipes must be cooked as submitted.
  2. There cannot be any other fruit in these pies.
  3. Recipe must accompany the entry
  4. Pies are judged on appearance, preparation, and taste.

Appearance: Overall eye appeal, uniformity of shape & color, and appearance of the crust.
Taste: Crust and filling will be judged separately. Flavor and consistency will be judged.
Preparation: Will be determined from the written recipe. Other things considered will be ease of preparing the recipe & how clearly the recipe ingredients and instructions are written

SCORING:

30 pts.- overall appearance;
30 pts. - crust flavor, color, & texture
30 pts. - filling flavor and consistency
10 pts. - ease of recipe preparation

Please have your pies at the exhibit hall at least ½ hour before contest time.

KIDS COOKIE CONTEST

Open to kids 12yrs old and under
Prize Money: 1st $25.00, 2nd $15.00, 3rd $10.00

  1. Entry must include 8 cookies on a disposable plate from the same batch.
  2. Cookies will be judged on taste, appearance and texture.
  3. Following recipe must be used by all entrants.

Jello Cookies

1 1/2 cups unsalted butter, softened
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
3 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
4- 3 oz. packages of jello (4 different ones, or 2 of 2 flavors or 4 of the same flavor)

Pre Heat Oven to 325 degrees.

In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar with a mixer -add in egg and vanilla.
In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda and cream of tartar.
Gradually add flour mixture to the wet ingredients in the mixer.
Divide the dough into four sections.

Sprinkle two tablespoons of Jello onto each section and then knead the dough until combined.
You can add a few drops of food coloring in, if you’d like the colors to be more vibrant
Roll dough into 1 inch balls. Roll the balls into extra jello powder or in the sugar
Then place dough on baking sheet - 2 inches apart
Flatten dough with the bottom of a glass
Bake cookies for 8-10 Minutes
Remove Cookies from the pan and allow to cool on wire rack

Contest to be held on Friday July 5th at 2:30pm in the Exhibit Hall


KIDS 12 & UNDER COOKING CONTEST

Open To Children 12 Years & Younger:
Prize Money: 1st: $25.00; 2nd $15.00; 3rd $10.00

Cupcake Contest- Kids 12 & under
 
Cook your favorite cupcake recipe- you may use a boxed cake mix or use your favorite family recipe.
Make at least 6 cupcakes and decorate them in anyway you like.... be creative.
Your cupcakes will be judged on creative, taste and originality.
Make sure you have your entry there ½ hour before contest.

Bring 6 cupcakes on a disposable plate to the exhibit hall

CONTEST WILL BE HELD ON FRIDAY JULY 5th AT 3:00pm IN THE EXHIBIT HALL


13-17 YEAR OLD COOKING CONTEST

Open to children 13yrs. Old -17 yrs. old
Prizes - 1st-$25 / 2nd-$15 / 3rd-$10

PICK YOUR FAVORITE FAJITA/BURRITO RECIPE

Make your favorite fajita/burrito recipe and wow the judges!!!
You must bring us at least 4 fajita/burrito in a disposable dish to be judged.

HOULTON FARMS DAIRY COOKING CONTEST

Sour Cream Blueberry Coffee Cake

Ingredients:

2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/8 teaspoon salt
2 cups white sugar
1 cup Houlton Farms Dairy butter
2 eggs
1 cup Houlton Farms Dairy sour cream
½ teaspoon vanilla extract

1 ½ cups packed brown sugar
1 cup all-purpose flour
3 tablespoons Houlton Farms Dairy butter, melted
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
2 cups fresh blueberries
1 cup chopped pecans

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease and flour a 9 X 13 inch baking dish.
  2. Combine 2 cups flour, baking powder, and salt in a bowl. Beat white sugar and 1 cup butter with an electric mixer in another bowl until light and fluffy; beat in eggs one at a time, allowing each egg to blend into the butter mixture before adding the next. Stir in sour cream and vanilla extract. Mix flour mixture into butter mixture until just blended; spread half the batter into prepared baking dish.
  3. Mix brown sugar, 1 cup flour, melted butter and cinnamon in a bowl until mixture resembles a course crumble. Sprinkle half the crumbles and half the blueberries over batter in baking dish. Spread remaining half of batter over blueberries and top remaining crumbles, blueberries and pecans.
  4. Bake in the preheated oven until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, 45 to 50 minutes.
